HelpCenterConnectingTesting your ModemWindows XPStep 1 - Checking the Phone LineIf you're having trouble connecting, you should first check that you are not having a problem with your actual phone line. Check to see if your phone line is connected to your computer, and that the line has not become damaged in anyway. If the phone line that you are using has been anchored in anyway, with staples for instance, check that the line has not been peirced by the anchors. Step 2- Check for a COM port ConflictIf you are sure that the phone line you are using is fine, you should check to see if you are experiencing a COM port conflict. Right click My Computer and select Properties.
From the System Properties window, click on the Harware tab. Click the button that reads Device Manager under the Device Manger section.
Click the "+" sign next to Modems.
If you see a yellow circle with a red "X" or an exclamation point, you are experiencing a COM port conflict and you'll need to modify your modem settings. |
